The First Tweet on Twitter Turns Out to Be 20 Years Old
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The first tweet on the social media platform Twitter (now X) has turned 20 years old. It all began with Jack Dorsey, who uploaded a simple message: “I am setting up Twitter.” According to TechCrunch on Saturday (21/3) local time, that simple upload ultimately created a social media platform that has evolved into the current X. The tweet was later sold by Jack Dorsey, one of Twitter’s founders, as an NFT for $2.9 million USD. However, its value has reportedly plummeted because it cannot be resold. After all that, Twitter transformed into the platform X, which is now owned by Elon Musk. Since X was acquired by Elon Musk, drastic employee cuts have taken place, sparking controversy. The platform has invited further controversies after being equipped with the Grok chatbot from xAI, which displayed antisemitic responses and was used to create sexual deepfakes victimising and depicting real women and children. Currently, X still holds strong influence among certain social media user groups, just as it did when it was called Twitter, but industry competition is inevitable, such as with Bluesky and Meta’s Threads. This is also evident in a recent report showing that Threads has surpassed X in the number of daily mobile users.
