The Figure of Try Sutrisno Through Wiranto's Eyes: A Statesman Complete

JAKARTA — Wiranto, Presidential Adviser for Political and Security Affairs, has reflected on the figure of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, Try Sutrisno, as a role model both as a military officer and state official.

“As a soldier, I believe he was a true soldier. From Second Lieutenant to General, he never ceased in his struggle. He fought for his conviction to defend the nation and country,” Wiranto stated whilst giving remarks at the residence of mourning in Menteng, Jakarta, on Monday, 2 March 2026.

Wiranto said that Try always carried out his duties with diligence and sincerity. As a military officer, Try was a figure of extraordinary dedication.

“And as a statesman, I believe he was a statesman complete,” said Wiranto, adding that “his simplicity, adherence to the constitution, his struggle that always defended the truth, and his orientation towards what he believed in” were defining characteristics.

During his time as Vice President serving under Suharto, Try was a figure who greatly prioritised the people’s interests. “As Vice President at that time, he always prioritised the people’s interests over personal and factional interests. He always thought about how to provide the best for the people and society,” Wiranto recalled.

For Wiranto, Try’s conduct should be emulated by everyone, both military personnel and state officials.

Try Sutrisno passed away at RSPAD military hospital at 06:58 Indonesian Western Time. According to plan, his body will be washed at the RSPAD residence of mourning and brought to the residence of mourning at Purwakarta Street Number 6, Menteng, Central Jakarta, for lying-in-state. His body will be prayed over at Sunda Kelapa Mosque and will subsequently be buried at the Heroes’ Cemetery (Taman Makam Pahlawan) Kalibata.
