The Era of Google Assistant Ends as Gemini Becomes Android's Primary Digital Assistant
Google has officially entered a new chapter in the development of digital assistants. After years of being a core component of Android devices, Google Assistant will begin to be phased out in September 2026, with its role gradually being replaced by Gemini.
According to reports from Telset, the discontinuation of Google Assistant will not happen all at once. Google will begin deactivating the service on 4 September 2026, and the migration process will take place gradually over several weeks until users on affected devices have fully transitioned to Gemini.
This discontinuation primarily targets mobile devices and Wear OS. Users of Android phones and tablets, as well as various wearable devices, will be directed to use Gemini as their primary digital assistant.
Nevertheless, Google Assistant has not completely disappeared from the entire Google ecosystem. The service remains available on several products, including Google TV and certain Google Home devices.
This move is not a sudden decision. Google has been preparing for the migration to Gemini since 2025 by moving several Assistant functions to the AI-based service.
According to Telset, users previously accustomed to using Google Assistant voice commands can still interact with Gemini using the “Hey Google” command. Users who do not yet have the Gemini application can install it via the Google Play Store.
The transition will make the digital assistant user experience slightly different. Gemini is not only designed to execute simple commands but is also capable of understanding more complex conversations and context.
This capability is one of the reasons Google is promoting Gemini as the replacement for Assistant. Gemini was developed as a generative AI that can assist users in searching for information, creating content, answering questions, and performing various tasks based on provided instructions.
The shift from Google Assistant to Gemini demonstrates how Google is changing the direction of digital assistant development. While Assistant previously functioned more as a tool for executing specific commands, Gemini is being positioned as an AI-based companion capable of understanding conversational context.
The development of Gemini continues to expand across various Google services and devices. Its integration with Android provides the company with greater scope to deliver AI features directly into users’ daily activities.
With the commencement of the Google Assistant phase-out in September 2026, Android users are slowly entering a new era. Gemini is no longer just an additional AI service, but is taking a significant position as the new face of Google’s digital assistant.
