The Educational Journey of Sudaryono: From Engineering Graduate to PhD with a 4.00 GPA

The name Sudaryono has returned to public attention after President Prabowo Subianto appointed him as the Head of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), replacing Nanik S Deyang, who resigned for health reasons. The appointment marks a new chapter in his political career after previously serving as Deputy Minister of Agriculture. Behind his work in government, Sudaryono has an equally compelling academic track record. The man familiarly called Mas Dar pursued education up to the doctoral level with proud academic achievements. He even completed his doctoral education with a perfect Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.00. Sudaryono’s educational journey also demonstrates his consistency in pursuing knowledge, from engineering to business and finance. His academic history is an important asset that complements his long experience in the professional world, organisations, and government. Sudaryono was born in Mangunrejo Hamlet, Tambirejo Village, Toroh District, Grobogan Regency, Central Java, on 23 January 1985. He comes from a modest family that depended on the agricultural sector for a living. His family’s economic condition was not well-established. His parents did not own their own farmland and had to rent rice fields to cultivate crops. When the planting season ended, his father, Yahya, worked as a construction labourer to meet the family’s needs. This background has become an identity Sudaryono is always proud of. On his personal Instagram account, he even wrote a short description: ‘Anak Petani dari Grobogan’ (A Farmer’s Child from Grobogan). Since childhood, Sudaryono was accustomed to helping with family chores. He fetched water from the village spring because the area where he lived often experienced a shortage of clean water, especially during the dry season. He also helped transport straw from the rice fields for his family’s livestock feed. Despite living with limitations, Sudaryono was known as a high-achieving child. His report card grades were consistently above eight, making him a role model for his friends. He had disciplined study habits. Sudaryono admitted he often studied after the dawn prayer before leaving for school. By doing so, the material explained by the teacher in class became easier to understand because he had already studied it at home beforehand.
