Nicotine is synonymous with cigarettes and addiction, so it is often considered the main cause of cancer.

So why is nicotine not categorised as a carcinogenic substance, and what exactly is the difference?
Carcinogenic is a term used for substances or exposures that can cause cancer. The sources are diverse, ranging from chemicals in tobacco smoke and radiation to certain types of viruses.

Nicotine has a different function from those substances. This compound is a highly addictive substance in tobacco products and plays a major role in making a person continue using those products.
Dependence on nicotine can also make it difficult for a person to stop using cigarettes.
In other words, nicotine and carcinogenic substances cannot simply be equated. Nicotine plays a role mainly in causing dependence, while various carcinogenic chemicals in tobacco smoke play a role in increasing cancer risk.
However, this does not mean nicotine is safe. Nicotine still has health impacts and is highly addictive.
Even in products such as electronic cigarettes, the aerosol can contain nicotine as well as other dangerous chemicals, including some cancer-causing substances.
Therefore, distinguishing nicotine from carcinogens does not mean regarding products that contain nicotine as safe products.
