The Dangers of Mudik Lebaran by Motorcycle: Quick Fatigue and High Accident Risk
JAKARTA — Mudik Lebaran (Lebaran homecoming travel) using motorcycles remains widely practised by the public, particularly for inter-city journeys covering hundreds of kilometres. However, this method is considered to carry relatively high safety risks.
Agus Sani, Head of Safety Riding Promotion, stated that motorcycles are fundamentally not designed for long-distance travel whilst carrying substantial cargo or multiple passengers. This condition can trigger faster fatigue in the rider.
“Mudik using a motorcycle is actually not recommended, especially for long-distance travel, because it is not designed for journeys of hundreds of kilometres whilst carrying lots of cargo or passengers, which means driver fatigue develops more quickly,” said Agus.
“When our bodies are fatigued, concentration inevitably decreases and the risk of accidents becomes higher,” he added.
Besides the fatigue factor, other risks stem from the minimal protection that motorcycles offer compared to four-wheeled vehicles. In the event of an accident, motorcycle riders are more vulnerable to serious injury.
For this reason, Agus advised the public to consider alternative modes of transport that are safer for long-distance travel during mudik.
“For long-distance travel during mudik, it is advisable to use safer modes of transport such as buses, trains, or cars,” he said.
