JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - National entrepreneur Michael Bambang Hartono passed away in Singapore on Thursday (19/3/2026) afternoon. Michael Hartono was one of the most influential figures in Indonesia’s conglomerate landscape. Together with his brother, Robert Budi Hartono, he built the family business empire that began in the kretek cigarette industry and expanded into a cross-sector group, including banking, electronics, property, and the digital economy. Michael Bambang Hartono was born in Kudus, Central Java, on 2 October 1939. He inherited the family business after his father, Oei Wie Gwan, passed away in 1963. The inherited Djarum cigarette company later developed into a major kretek producer in Indonesia under the leadership of Michael and Robert. Business expansion began alongside the growth of the cigarette industry. Djarum recorded its first export in 1972, while also expanding its product portfolio and strengthening its distribution network. Success in the cigarette sector became the foundation for capital accumulation, which was then used for business diversification. This strategy became the main characteristic of the Hartono family’s conglomerate development in the subsequent decades. As the business scale increased, the Hartono family expanded investments into various industrial sectors. One important step was the establishment of the Polytron electronics brand in 1975, which served as the group’s entry into the consumer electronics manufacturing sector. In addition, the business group also ventured into plantations, paper, and telecommunications infrastructure. The diversification steps are seen as a strategy to reduce dependence on one industry, while opening new sources of growth amid changing regulations and societal consumption dynamics. One of the important milestones in Michael Bambang Hartono’s business journey was the Hartono family’s entry into the banking sector through investment in PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BBCA). The acquisition of shares in the bank occurred after the 1997–1998 Asian economic crisis, when ownership of BCA changed hands through a restructuring process.
