The Coffee Trail from Mount Wangun, West Java: Still a Hidden Gem

The popularity of coffee among Indonesians, particularly the millennial generation, has surged in recent years, evidenced by the proliferation of coffee shops in every corner of the city. This trend is driven not only by the modern appeal of these establishments but also by the rich variety of coffee flavours available. Indonesia’s status as one of the world’s leading coffee producers means that different regions offer beans with distinct tastes. One such region is Bogor Regency in West Java, whose high-altitude terrain is ideal for robusta cultivation. The area has transformed into one of the largest robusta-producing regions in the province, with an annual output reaching 4,004 tonnes, placing it fourth nationally. Despite this, a particular local variety from Mount Wangun remains largely unknown. Cultivated by a group of farmers in Karang Tengah Village, Babakan Madang, at elevations between 600 and 900 metres above sea level, this authentic Bogor robusta coffee is a hidden gem. Local farmers sell the roasted beans for Rp 60,000 per 500 grams.
