The Challenge Against Gibran’s Educational Background

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two years into his tenure as Vice President, Gibran Rakabuming Raka has come under fire twice. In May 2025, several retired Indonesian Military (TNI) officers floated the idea of impeaching Joko Widodo’s eldest son. Now Denny Indrayana, a former Deputy Justice and Human Rights Minister, has filed a petition with the Constitutional Court challenging Gibran’s educational background.

Denny, who heads the Integrity Law Firm, is challenging the educational documents Gibran used to meet the requirements for registering as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2024 General Election. He filed the petition with the Constitutional Court on Thursday, September 10, 2026. “I am asking the Constitutional Court to disqualify or remove Gibran as vice president,” he said in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, September 15.

Denny’s idea to challenge Gibran’s educational background before the Constitutional Court grew out of a discussion with former Constitutional Court Justice Harjono about two months ago. In phone calls and WhatsApp messages with Harjono, Denny said he had found irregularities in Gibran’s candidacy beyond the change to the age requirement for candidates brought about by Constitutional Court Decision No. 90.

The General Elections Commission (KPU), issued Regulation No. 19/2023 on the Nomination of Participants in the Election of the President and Vice President. According to Denny’s records, the regulation was issued about two weeks before Gibran was announced as Prabowo Subianto’s running mate.
