The case of Adiguna Sutowo

From Media Indonesia

It is important for us to keep abreast of the development of the investigation into the fatal shooting of Haerudy Natong (Rudy). Even President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has said that this crime cannot be tolerated.

Actually, this case cannot be covered up as the crime scene was at Hilton Hotel's Fluid Club Bar, where the many guests celebrating the arrival of the new year there could easily be asked to testify.

A fatal shooting is a simple case. If the perpetrator denies that he committed the crime, other evidence can easily be collected. In this regard, there are several things that the police must bear in mind. First, they must not try to cover up this case. If they do, the public will think little of the integrity, professionalism and performance of the police as the protectors and the servants of the public.

Second, they must not make this simple case complicated. Third, they must not relax their resolve in tackling this case by, for example, changing the detention status or buying time in the investigation and in handing over the case to the public prosecutor's office. Fourth, the police must not allow the family of the victim to withdraw their complaint, for example, on the grounds that they have received some compensation.

Fifth, the police must continue to be consistent and firm in resolving this case.
