The Case Behind Razman Arif Nasution's Imprisonment in Cipinang Prison
Lawyer Razman Arif Nasution has been executed to Class I Cipinang Prison following the Supreme Court’s rejection of his cassation appeal in a defamation case against fellow lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea. The Supreme Court sentenced Razman to 1.5 years in prison. The cassation was adjudicated by a panel of judges chaired by Supreme Justice Yohanes Priyana, with members Noor Edi Yono and Sutarjo. The ruling, numbered 5227 K/PID.SUS/2026, stated, “Reject the cassation of the Public Prosecutor and reject the cassation of the Defendant.”
The case was initially tried at the North Jakarta District Court. The judge found Razman legally and convincingly guilty of jointly and intentionally transmitting and/or making accessible electronic information and/or electronic documents containing insults and/or defamation, committed as a continuing act. The judge also found Razman guilty of joint slander.
The defamation case against Hotman Paris occurred in 2022. Prosecutors charged Razman with defaming Hotman together with Putri Iqlima Aprilia. Iqlima was also a defendant in the case and was sentenced to 6 months in prison and a fine of Rp 100 million. Razman was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison and a fine of Rp 200 million. Razman contested the verdict, filing appeals up to the cassation level, but his legal efforts failed.
Head of Cipinang Prison, Syarpani, confirmed that Razman was transferred to the facility on Thursday, 25 June 2026, based on a letter from the North Jakarta District Attorney’s Office. The timeline of the case began in April 2022 when Razman reported Hotman to the police over alleged indecent posts. Hotman retaliated, telling Razman not to be envious. Later that month, Razman accused Hotman of harassing his former personal assistant, Putri Iqlima Aprilia, which Hotman denied. In May 2022, Hotman reported Razman and Iqlima to the Criminal Investigation Department for defamation. By July 2022, Iqlima reversed her stance, claiming she was a victim of advocate malpractice and stating no harassment occurred. Razman was questioned by police in August 2022. The trial officially began in December 2024, with both Razman and Iqlima charged with defamation. In February 2025, a courtroom altercation erupted between Razman and Hotman at the North Jakarta District Court, with video footage showing Razman approaching Hotman and a subsequent scuffle involving their legal teams. In July 2025, prosecutors sought a 2-year prison sentence and a Rp 200 million fine for Razman. The North Jakarta District Court sentenced him to 1.5 years in prison and a Rp 200 million fine in September 2025. His appeals to the High Court in November 2025 and the Supreme Court in May 2026 were both rejected. Iqlima Kim’s 6-month sentence was also upheld through cassation, and her case is now under judicial review.
