The Business Empire of the Djarum Group Built by Michael Bambang Hartono Before His Passing
Bisnis.com, JAKARTA – Owner of the Djarum Group, Michael Bambang Hartono, passed away on Thursday, 19 March 2026.
The man born in Kudus, Central Java, on 2 October 1939, successfully built a sprawling business empire under the Djarum Group, spanning segments from tobacco and finance to telecommunications.
According to a Forbes report as of Thursday (19/3/2026), Michael Hartono ranked 157th among the world’s richest people. The estimated net worth he left behind is US$17.5 billion, or approximately Rp297.41 trillion (exchange rate of Rp16,995 per US dollar).
The Djarum Group oversees several companies under the investment holding company PT Dwimuria Investama Andalan, which is the majority shareholder of PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BBCA).
In addition to BBCA, several affiliated companies under the Djarum Group include PT Sarana Menara Nusantara Tbk (TOWR), PT Solusi Tunas Pratama Tbk (SUPR), PT Global Digital Niaga (BELI), and PT Supra Boga Lestari Tbk (RANC).
Meanwhile, in the food and beverage segment, the Djarum Group owns PT Sumber Kopi Prima, a producer of branded products Caffino and Kopi Gadjah. There is also PT Savoria Kreasi Rasa, a producer of branded products Yuzu.
Next, in the property sector, the Djarum Group holds PT Cipta Karya Bumi Indah, a private company that won the management of the Grand Indonesia area in 2004. This company is behind the development of the Grand Indonesia shopping centre and the renovation of the Hotel Indonesia into a five-star hotel named Hotel Indonesia Kempinski.
In addition, other property companies under the Djarum Group include PT Fajar Surya Perkasa, PT Nagaraja Lestari, PT Inti Karya Bumi Indah, and PT GRaha Padma Internusa.
The expansion does not stop there; the Djarum Group also extends its wings into the electronics business segment. The Hartono brothers own PT Hartono Istana Teknologi (Polytron) as well as Mola TV. In the tobacco sector, there is PT Djarum, known for its various cigarette variants such as Djarum Cokelat to LA.
As an investment holding company overseeing many business units of the Djarum Group, PT Dwimuria Investama Andalan recorded solid financial performance throughout 2025. The company posted a net profit of Rp31.64 trillion for the 2025 fiscal year, an increase of 6.3% compared to the 2024 realisation of Rp29.74 trillion.
