There is a story that always makes modern humans a little envious of the prophets. Not solely because of their miracles, but because the distance between humans and nature felt so close in those times. The Qur’an tells of how the Prophet Solomon understood the language of birds, even hearing an ant warn its colony to avoid the marching steps of his army. For believers, this is not a zoological fable, but an affirmation that God can lift the veil on the communication of His creatures for whomever He wills.
Centuries later, humans are trying to lift that same veil. Not through miracles, but through microphones, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and almost unimaginable patience. This week, the scientific world awarded a $100,000 prize to a researcher who managed to compile a sort of ‘dictionary’ of the zebra finch’s language. Dr Julie Elie from the University of California, Berkeley, spent over fifteen years answering a single, deceptively simple question: what exactly are these cute, strikingly coloured birds talking about?
The question might sound amusing. Yet the history of science often begins with questions that are laughed at. Isaac Newton asked why an apple falls. Charles Darwin asked why finches on different islands have different beaks. Now, Julie Elie asked why these beautifully patterned birds are so chatty. The results are surprising.
She discovered that zebra finches possess eleven basic calls, a core vocabulary used in various situations. What does this finch dictionary contain? Elie identified eleven fundamental calls, each with a distinct function. There is a ‘distance call’, a sort of ‘hello, I’m here’ used to locate or summon the flock from afar. A ‘tet call’ is a soft greeting used whilst foraging together. The ‘long tonal call’ is used by young birds to maintain contact over long distances. A ‘tet-S call’ is a variation of a short greeting. The ‘nest call’ is used by breeding pairs to coordinate incubation and chick care. A ‘whine call’ helps strengthen the bond between partners as they build a nest. The ‘wsst call’ is a threat sound to drive away intruders. A ‘distress call’ is an emergency cry when facing danger. The ‘begging call’ is the whine of a hungry chick asking for food. The ‘thuk call’ aids close-range communication within the group, while the ‘tuck call’ is used to reinforce the pair bond.
Beyond these eleven core calls, male birds have a more complex song, a kind of ‘musical business card’ used to attract mates and mark their territory. When translated into human terms, the birds’ dictionary does not begin with philosophy or poetry. Their first words are profoundly practical: ‘I am here’, ‘Come closer’, ‘Danger!’, ‘I’m hungry’, ‘This is my territory’, or ‘I am your mate’. Perhaps this is how language itself developed, not from grand ideas, but from the need to survive and live together. There are calls to establish identity, to indicate an activity, and even a ‘vocal signature’ that allows a bird to be recognised by its friends even if the message changes.
Even more intriguingly, birds are more likely to mistake calls that have the same meaning than calls that sound the same. It is as if they truly understand the semantics, not just the sound. This finding may seem small, but it fundamentally shakes one of humanity’s oldest conceits. For centuries, humans have considered language the final bastion that separates us from other creatures. Aristotle called man the zoon logon echon, the being with rational speech. Descartes was even more extreme, viewing animals as mere biological machines moving by reflex, not thought. They make sounds, but they do not truly speak.
Modern science is slowly eroding this belief. Dolphins are known to have personal ‘name’ whistles. Elephants communicate through infrasonic vibrations that travel for kilometres. Bees dance to give coordinates of flower fields. Octopuses display surprising problem-solving skills. And now, a tiny bird barely a dozen centimetres long has shown that its communication possesses a structure of meaning.
