The Benefits of Prioritising Clothing Functionality Over Trends
Kompas.com - Ever-changing fashion trends and the wide array of colours and styles often lead to overflowing wardrobes as consumers struggle to resist buying the latest items. Without planning, clothing purchases can become a significant expense, especially when items are only worn once and end up gathering dust in the closet.
The Sustainability Lead at PT Fast Retailing Indonesia (Uniqlo), Michelle Marietta Secoa, shared several tips for mindful buying to make purchases more measured and avoid simply following momentary desires.
“Buying clothes can be based on their functionality. Some clothes can also be used for other purposes,” she told Kompas.com in Central Jakarta on Wednesday (25/2/2026).
She explained that clothing with a timeless concept allows a single item to be used in various situations.
For example, a top can be worn for casual activities or sports, depending on how it is styled.
“Because it is timeless, a single item of clothing can be worn for sporty or casual looks. It just needs to be mixed and matched or layered,” said Michelle.
The layering approach is one strategy to keep basic clothing the same, but the look can be adjusted to suit the need.
This flexibility means that a single item of clothing is not limited to just one activity. Adding an outer layer is a quick way to change the function of the inner clothing in an instant, without having to change the entire look.
“But the outer layer should be adjusted. If it’s cold, you can wear a thick jacket. If you’re doing outdoor sports, you can wear a jacket that has UV protection. The inner layer remains the same, but the look can be different,” said Michelle.
Michelle highlighted the tendency of consumers to buy the same product, but in different colours.
