KOMPAS.com - Choosing the right snack can not only curb overeating but also offer health benefits. One such example is chocolate, which is said to slow down the ageing process.

The secret behind these benefits is closely related to biological age, which assesses how young the body’s cells are compared to chronological age.

‘(Biological age) is a way for scientists to estimate how old our cells look based on chemical markers in our DNA,’ said Sowmya Kurtakoti, M.D., director of medical geriatrics and outpatient palliative care at Hartford HealthCare, as quoted by Prevention on Sunday (17/5/2026).

‘These markers can be influenced by factors such as diet, stress, smoking, physical activity, and chronic diseases,’ she added.

In other words, a person who is very fit may have cells that are younger than their actual age.

The ageing process is measured using special tools to monitor DNA and daily habits in order to predict life expectancy. So, what exactly is theobromine?

‘Theobromine is a bitter-tasting stimulant alkaloid found in cocoa beans, tea, and kola nuts,’ explained Mark Houston, M.D., chairman of cardiovascular education at the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.

Chemically, theobromine is similar to caffeine but milder, making it the main compound responsible for the stimulating effects of chocolate.

This compound can relax blood vessels and also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties when you eat dark chocolate.

These findings do not show a direct causal link between eating chocolate and guaranteeing longevity.

‘This does not mean that study participants were proven to live longer or be free from disease, only that certain ageing markers in their cells appeared ’younger’ than their actual age. It is important to note that this is an association, not proof that theobromine causes slower ageing,’ said Kurtakoti.

It is possible that the dark chocolate consumers surveyed also exercised regularly, ate healthier diets, and had adequate access to medical care.

Moreover, large amounts of chocolate contain extra sugar, fat, and calories. All of these can worsen long-term health.

Therefore, excessive portions of chocolate are not recommended. Furthermore, dark chocolate is more advisable because it has the highest concentration of cocoa compared to regular milk chocolate, making it contain more theobromine.

Prioritise a balanced diet including increasing intake from plant-based sources, exercising regularly, avoiding smoking, managing stress, and ensuring quality sleep.
