The Bank Bali audit report
The Bank Bali audit report
The Indonesian people have a vital interest in the recovery of the economy. If one major precondition for this is a resumption of the disbursement of funds by international financial institutions, then that demand must be met. The PricewaterhouseCoopers audit report (on the Bank Bali scandal) in its unabridged form is already in the hands of the House of Representatives. Releasing the data to the public should not be difficult to do.
However, some of our legislators, for whatever reasons, are still behaving like remnants of the old regime. Some of them are even suspected of involvement in the scandal. But if the House of Representatives remains reluctant to publish the full audit report, the government should take over and release it to the public forthwith. There is no need to cover up the disgrace brought on us by criminals -- irrespective of whether they are government officials, politicians or businesspeople.
The realization of the commitment of the Abdurrahman Wahid- Megawati Soekarnoputri Cabinet to establish a clean government must start here, with proof that it has the courage to settle the Bank Bali case once and for all. Attorney General Marzuki Darusman has a crucial role to play in this matter. It would be pathetic if the President's trust in him is wasted. As for those people in the House of Representatives, just leave them alone in their wavering.
