The Air Force: Guardians of Public Health on the Nation's Frontier

Natuna (ANTARA) - The rain that has drenched the Natuna Regency, Riau Islands, since Saturday night (25/7) left behind grey skies and cold air as morning approached. Such conditions typically prompt residents to spend more time relaxing at home. However, a different atmosphere was observed at the Piwang Beach area, East Bunguran District, where hundreds of residents began arriving since early morning.

Amidst the crowds, several Indonesian Air Force soldiers in blue camouflage uniforms could be seen moving from one location to another. They were not conducting military exercises, but were instead assisting residents attending a free mass medical treatment programme organised by the Raden Sadjad Air Force Base (Lanud RSA) Natuna. The Air Force personnel were seen assisting elderly citizens, pushing wheelchairs, helping with registration forms, and directing the public towards examination rooms. This approach fostered a sense of familiarity between the ‘sky troops’ and the community members seeking services.

The activity is part of the commemorations for the 79th Air Force Service Day. Lanud RSA provided healthcare services involving ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists, dentists, general practitioners, and healthcare professionals, while also providing necessary medications to the public. From the early hours, queues of residents filled the venue, arriving via various means, including walking with families, bringing children, or assisting elderly parents in need of health check-ups.

The organisers intentionally opened registration early, before the ceremonial proceedings began, to ensure smooth service delivery. Two large tents were prepared as waiting areas so that residents, particularly the elderly, would not have to stand for long periods. Amidst the activity, the soldiers worked efficiently to ensure every citizen received orderly service, strengthening the bond between the military and the local community.
