JAKARTA — The fire in Kemayoran Gempol, located behind Jiung Market, Kebon Kosong, Central Jakarta, on Monday (1/6/2026) evening, has left only the debris of affected houses remaining. Observations at the site on Tuesday (2/6/2026) between 08:30 and 09:00 WIB showed that the burnt buildings have been reduced to rubble, ash, corrugated iron sheets, and charred timber.

Several residents were seen at the location inspecting the remains of their burnt homes, while others searched through the ruins for items that might still be salvageable. Kotnawi, a school uniform trader, shared that he was at the market when his grandchild informed him of the fire. Upon returning to the alley near his house, he witnessed large flames rising high into the air.

Kotnawi was unable to approach his home due to shortness of breath caused by inhaling thick smoke. He reported that his house and belongings were completely destroyed. The property included units occupied by his children as well as rental units. Currently, Kotnawi’s extended family is sheltering in a temporary tent established north of the fire site. He noted that almost all belongings in eight houses were consumed by the flames. While his son’s motorcycle was moved to safety, all other possessions were lost. Kotnawi expressed hope that the victims of the fire will receive assistance from the government.
