The 10-Second Pause Trick to Avoid Getting Emotionally Provoked When Facing Hoaxes Online
The rapid circulation of information on the internet often prompts netizens to respond impulsively without much thought. To curb the reactive habit that frequently leads to the proliferation of hoaxes and cyberbullying, an initiative promoting self-restraint called “Jeda 10 Detik” is now being widely encouraged among the public. “This is becoming a new norm and standard in our digital lives,” said Bonifasius Wahyu Pudjianto during a Blibli press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday (28/4/2026). He hopes that the habit of taking a brief pause before responding will not just be a seasonal trend but will truly integrate into the daily routines of every citizen. Boni, as he is affectionately known, revealed that the government is very aware that the level of technological understanding among Indonesian society is not yet evenly distributed. “We are very aware that Indonesian society’s digital literacy has a very wide gap,” he stated. Education on digital literacy is being intensively promoted on a massive scale to cultivate netizens’ critical abilities in filtering the various streams of information they receive daily. Efforts to equalise literacy are important because there are still many overlooked gaps in the spread of misinformation. One of the most relatable real examples is interactions through family chat groups, where many users habitually share provocative links without first cross-checking their veracity. “Usually, the most frequent sharing is to family groups. Forgetting that in family groups there are parents, siblings, younger relatives, and nephews (who are vulnerable to clickbait content),” said Nazrya Octora, Head of PR at Blibli. As a layered protection guide in cyberspace, the government has formulated a special education pillar named CABE, which includes elements of Cakap Digital (Digital Competence), Aman Digital (Digital Safety), Budaya Digital (Digital Culture), and Etika Digital (Digital Ethics). In addition to strengthening the mental resilience of adult groups, supervision efforts must also be specifically directed at child users. They are the most vulnerable party to swallowing the negative impacts of the online world raw if left to surf freely without strict family supervision.
