JAKARTA (JP): Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher
will start a three-day visit in Indonesia today as a speaker at
the Citibank Asian Leadership Series meeting.
A statement released from Citibank over the weekend stated
that the series, launched in 1992, consists of discussions on the
emerging role of the Asia-Pacific region and on leadership in the
new world order.
Thatcher's visit marks Citibank's 27th anniversary in
Indonesia. She will speak on regional economic and political
issues and share Indonesia's economic achievements. She will also
address the opportunities and obstacles facing the Asia-Pacific
region.
Thatcher was appointed prime minister, First Lord of the
Treasury and Minister for Civil Service in 1979, following the
success of the Conservative Party in Britain's general elections.
When the Conservative Party subsequently won the general
elections in 1983 and 1987, Thatcher became the first British
prime minister in the century to contest three consecutive
general elections. (pwn)
