Thanks to Campus Emergency Training, 61 UMY KKN Students Survive NTT Earthquake

Sixty-one students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) who were undertaking community service programmes (KKN) in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) felt the force of a magnitude 7.7 earthquake that shook the region on Saturday (15/8/2026). Despite experiencing the tremors, they have been confirmed safe and unharmed.

“Our group’s condition, thank God, is safe. During the third aftershock, everyone had already prepared all essential belongings and together headed to the hills,” said UMY KKN student representative Didan Oktanova Hermawan, known as Awan, in a statement shared by UMY on Sunday.

The students were divided into two KKN groups. Twenty-six students from the Gema Pelita Nusantara (GPN) group were carrying out their programme in Macang Tanggar Village, Komodo District, West Manggarai Regency. Meanwhile, 35 students from the Proyek Ekspedisi Nusantara (PENA) group were in Nanga Mbaling Village, Sambi Rampas District, East Manggarai Regency.

Amid their KKN activities, the students also helped residents affected by the earthquake and evacuated together with them to hilly areas after a tsunami warning was issued.

“We evacuated to the hilly areas and have started building emergency tents,” he said.
