Jakarta - A plot of land in Insit Village, Tebing Tinggi Barat District, Kepulauan Meranti caught fire. Thanks to a community report through the 110 emergency service, Kepulauan Meranti Police, the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) moved swiftly to extinguish the blaze.

The fire was reported on the afternoon of Saturday, 14 February 2026. Police officers who received the report through the 110 service rushed to the location to put out the flames. A total of 41 personnel were deployed in the operation, comprising 21 police officers, 2 military personnel, 9 BPBD staff, 6 village officials and 3 members of the Fire-Aware Community (MPA) of Insit Village.

Officers used mini strike engines and fire hoses to tackle the blaze. However, the firefighting effort was hampered by the lack of water sources near the fire location.

Kepulauan Meranti Police Chief AKBP Aldi Alfa Faroqi stated that the fire was suspected to have been triggered by a combination of natural factors and human activity. "The forest and land fire is believed to have been caused by land clearing through burning as well as negligence such as carelessly discarding cigarette butts," said Aldi on Sunday (15/2/2026).

After several hours of battling the flames, the fire was finally extinguished at approximately 18:00 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). Nevertheless, thin smoke was still visible at the location, prompting officers to remain on standby to prevent the fire from reigniting.

The fire site was located at coordinates 0.9774 N, 102.67596 E. The situation has been declared safe and under control, whilst joint personnel continue to monitor the area of the former fire.

Kepulauan Meranti Police also urged the public not to clear land by burning and to immediately report any signs of fire through the 110 emergency service.
