Thailand to send more laborers abroad
BANGKOK (DPA): Thailand's Labor Ministry expects to send up to 210,000 laborers abroad this year, with over half of them going to Taiwan, a news report said on Sunday.
The ministry's deputy director of the employment department, Wanchai Phadungsupalai, said prospects for overseas employment for skilled Thai workers were good this year, especially in Taiwan, Singapore, Brunei, Israel and Malaysia, said The Bangkok Post.
In 1999, an estimated 115,096 Thais found jobs in Taiwan, where there was a construction boom following the earthquakes that devastated parts of the island's infrastructure.
Other popular destinations for Thai laborers last year included Singapore, where an estimated 14,525 Thais found work, Malaysia, which employed 17,716 Thais, Brunei, 7,657 and the Middle East, 18,777, according to Labor Ministry statistics.
