Thailand has mandated a 21-day quarantine for travellers arriving from or transiting through the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, following a surge in Ebola cases in both countries.

‘The Ministry of Health of Thailand stated that travellers with or without Ebola symptoms must be quarantined for at least 21 days,’ according to an AFP report on Saturday, 30 May 2026.

According to a report from the Congolese Ministry of Health last weekend, since the outbreak was declared on Friday, 15 May 2026, the disease has caused 204 deaths and 867 suspected cases.

Meanwhile, in Uganda, one death has been reported and six people have tested positive for the virus.

Asymptomatic travellers will be placed in designated quarantine facilities.

Thailand has so far reported no Ebola cases among travellers.

However, the potential risk remains due to high global population movement, according to Senior Public Health Ministry official Somlerk Jeungsmarn.

Ebola is a deadly viral disease transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids, which can cause severe bleeding and organ failure.

The WHO has recorded 10 confirmed Ebola deaths, 220 suspected Ebola-related deaths in the Democratic Republic of Congo since mid-May 2026, and 900 additional suspected cases.

The UN agency stated that the actual spread of the virus, which experts suspect has been undetected for some time, is likely much wider.
