Thai power firm to expand
BANGKOK (Reuter): Major Thai power producer Electricity Generating Plc plans to expand its power generating business into Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia and Myanmar, a senior company executive said.
"Under our five-year strategy, EGCO will from now on concentrate more on overseas markets in the region to sustain our growth," Amporn Pongpreecha, EGCO's managing director, told reporters.
Amporn said EGCO was now studying markets in the region to facilitate its planned expansion.
Meanwhile, EGCO's acquisition of a 824-megawatt power plant from the state Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, as part of the government's plan to liberalise power generation, is expected to be complete early next year, Amporn said.
Khanom Electricity Generating Co Ltd, a wholly-owned unit of EGCO, has raised 20 billion baht to buy the southern Thai power plant, he said.
