BANGKOK (AP): Thai Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai is to visit
neighboring Laos on May 26 through May 28 at the invitation of
his Laotian counterpart Sisavath Keobounphanh, Thai and Laotian
officials said on Thursday.
Chuan's office could not yet give further details of the
visit, the first by a Thai premier to the communist state since
1997. Sisavath visited Thailand in March last year.
The Nation newspaper reported that Chuan was expected to
preside over the signing of a provisional electricity purchase
agreement for the Nam Theun II hydropower dam, Laos' largest
proposed foreign investment project.
A Laotian diplomat in Bangkok, speaking on condition of
anonymity, said that a tentative agreement was reached on pricing
this week between Laos and Thailand, but details have yet to be
finalized.
