Thai PM seeks end to border violence

BANGKOK (AP): Thailand's Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai is
calling on Myanmar's military government to cooperate in trying
to end violence and illegal activities along their common border,
The Nation newspaper reported on Monday.

Chuan raised the border problems with Gen. Than Shwe, the
leader of Myanmar's government, when he visited Thailand last
month, and the Myanmar general pledged cooperation.

Since then, however, at least 10 Thais, including a policeman,
have been killed in two separate incidents reportedly involving
drug trafficking along the border.

Chuan reiterated that the flow of drugs and the violence that
goes with it can only be stopped by the joint efforts of both
countries, The Nation said.
