Thai PM in Laos to strengthen ties
BANGKOK (AFP): Thai Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai Friday left here for a three-day official visit to neighboring Laos to strengthen ties between the two Southeast Asian nations, a government spokesman said.
Chuan will talk with Laotian Prime Minister Somsavath Koebounphanh about a second "friendship bridge" to be constructed over the Mekong River, government spokesman Akapol Sorasuchart said.
On his visit, Chuan is also set to announce Thailand will open its market to 25 more Laotian agricultural products. Thailand enjoys a huge trade surplus with Laos.
In addition to meeting with the prime minister, Chuan will pay a courtesy call on Laotian President Khamtay Siphandone and will tour Laos' old royal capital of Luang Prabang, Akapol said.
