A Thai cargo vessel, the Mayuree Naree, was reported to have caught fire after being targeted by an aerial attack whilst transiting the Strait of Hormuz on the morning of 11 March 2026, local time.

Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiphan, official spokesman for the Royal Thai Navy, stated that the 30,000-tonne vessel was attacked shortly after departing Khalifa Port in the United Arab Emirates.

β€œThe attack occurred as the vessel transited the Strait of Hormuz and caused a severe fire in the stern section of the ship,” Rattanachaiphan said in a statement to the press in Bangkok.

Following receipt of the attack report through international naval channels, the Royal Thai Navy Operations Centre immediately coordinated with the Omani Navy and the Thai Embassy in Oman to launch a search and rescue (SAR) mission.

To date, the source of the aerial attack remains unidentified. Thai authorities and regional security agencies in the Middle East are continuing a thorough investigation to determine whether the attack involved state actors or non-state groups in the region currently experiencing significant unrest.

The incident comes amidst escalating military tensions in the Middle East involving retaliatory strikes between nations in recent weeks. Maritime industry operators have been urged to exercise heightened vigilance when transiting Gulf waters.

At least three commercial vessels have been reported attacked in the Gulf region. As the conflict enters its twelfth day, global attention remains focused on the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has stated it will not allow the United States, Israel, or their allies to receive oil supplies from the Middle East whilst the conflict continues.

US military forces have destroyed dozens of Iranian naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz, whilst Israel has launched waves of aerial attacks against Tehran and Lebanon.

The White House has denied reports that the US Navy has escorted tankers through the Strait of Hormuz following controversial statements by Energy Minister Wright on social media.
