Thai cargo ship attacked and set ablaze in Strait of Hormuz
A Thai-registered cargo ship has been attacked from the air in the Strait of Hormuz and caught fire, with approximately 20 crew members rescued by Omani naval personnel, according to Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiphan, an official representative of the Royal Thai Navy, on Wednesday.
The Thai cargo vessel Mayuree Naree, with a displacement of 30,000 tonnes, was attacked from the air on Wednesday morning after departing Port Khalifa in the United Arab Emirates. The attack occurred as the ship transited the Strait of Hormuz and caused a major fire at the stern of the vessel, Rattanachaiphan told reporters.
The Thai Naval Operations Centre immediately contacted the Omani Navy and the Royal Thai Embassy in Oman upon receiving notification of the attack through international naval channels in order to conduct search and rescue operations.
The twenty Thai crew members rescued have been brought to Omani shores to ensure their wellbeing. The source and cause of the attack remain unknown and are still under investigation.
