Thai army opens bases for tourists
BANGKOK (AFP): Thailand's cash-strapped army announced a plan yesterday to open up its bases around the country to tourists in an effort to raise much-needed money.
Army commander Chettha Thanajaro said in a statement that the army would open some of its camps up to paying tourists following government budget cuts which had left it short of cash.
"As the country is suffering from a terrible economic crisis which impacts on our security, the army as a government agency wishes to promote tourism during the 'Amazing Thailand' campaign by opening up some of its bases," he said.
The statement said the army would lure tourists with shooting, parachuting, orienteering and survival, as well as lessons in history, the environment and sports activities such as golf.
