TGB Denies NW Affiliation with Islamic Boarding School in Lombok Student Burning Case
The Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Wathan Diniyah Islamiyah (PB NWDI), Tuan Guru Bajang (TGB) Zainul Majdi, has spoken out regarding the alleged burning of three students at the Rosyidatusshaulatiyyah Al Ibrahimy NW Islamic Boarding School in Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, on 13 December 2025. TGB clarified that the boarding school where the incident occurred is not under the auspices of the organisation he leads, NWDI, but rather under a different organisation. He stressed that the criminal incident should not be used to corner any particular organisation or group.
The former two-term Governor of West Nusa Tenggara called on law enforcement to investigate the case thoroughly so that the victims receive justice. He expressed regret over statements made by a member of the House of Representatives Commission III that linked the case to an organisation he claimed was unrelated. The case began with alleged abuse that resulted in four victims; two suffered serious burns, one sustained minor injuries, and a 13-year-old student died on 19 February 2026 after medical treatment. Central Lombok Police have named two suspects: a 15-year-old senior student and the 55-year-old leader of the boarding school.
TGB urged law enforcement to act swiftly and decisively to prevent the case from fuelling speculation and slander. He also called for all parties to ensure that Islamic boarding schools remain safe and comfortable places for students to build character. He accepted public criticism as a form of care and said it would serve as a basis for introspection to improve student protection. The case was previously raised in a hearing with House of Representatives Commission III, where a lawmaker highlighted the school’s affiliation with NW and questioned the lack of intervention in revealing the case.
