Test cases for Marzuki
Test cases for Marzuki
By reopening the investigation into alleged wrongdoings by
former President Soeharto and declaring a number of Texmaco
business executives suspects (in a case involving possible
irregularities in acquiring bank credits) Attorney General
Marzuki Darusman has reached a point of no return in our efforts
to uphold the law. This, of course, is most laudable, provided
that Marzuki succeeds. Otherwise, the reputation of our judicial
system could become even worse than it has been so far.
Naturally, we don't want Marzuki to repeat the mistake former
attorney general (Andi M.) Ghalib made by starting a series of
investigations only for political gain. We want Marzuki to be
able to send corruptors to prison or he won't be any different
from his immediate predecessors.
To demonstrate his serious intentions, Marzuki had better
report the progress he is making to the public on a weekly basis.
The Texmaco and Soeharto cases are two difficult test cases for
Marzuki Darusman. Hopefully, he will turn out to be different
from his predecessors Andi Ghalib and Ismudjoko.
