Jakarta (ANTARA) - The American automotive manufacturer focused on producing pure electric vehicles, Tesla, has once again dominated the highest sales position in 2026, defeating its closest rival, China’s BYD. Arena EV reported on Monday (6/4) local time that Tesla has officially reclaimed its throne as the global leader in pure electric cars, pushing the Chinese carmaker to second place. The battle for the top seat in the current automotive industry had to be fought by Tesla through various efforts that demonstrate the modern automotive sector’s considerable challenges. In the final months of 2025, BYD indeed had unmatched performance. The brand sold more battery-powered vehicles than any other company. This represented a 6.5 percent increase compared to the same period last year. It may sound like a small increase, but it was more than enough to defeat their competitors in the modern automotive industry. BYD’s sales in the pure electrification segment experienced a 25.5 percent decline. The Shenzhen-based company only managed to deliver 310,389 units of pure electric vehicles in the first quarter. That sales record further strengthens Tesla’s credibility in the industry. Tesla and BYD’s sales in that period were quite far apart, reaching 48,000 vehicle units. BYD’s downturn in the electric vehicle industry was caused by regulations from the Chinese government. The government is encouraging the public to switch to pure battery vehicles. However, new rules issued by the Chinese government are forcing the public to delay EV purchases. For example, last year, the public did not need to pay sales tax when buying new electric cars. This year, the government has added a 5 percent tax. If someone buys a car for 100,000 yuan, consumers must pay an additional 5,000 yuan in tax. Nevertheless, the government still provides support to those who switch, but not as substantial as in the early days of the EV gateway.
