Jakarta - Tesla has recorded sales of its flagship electric vehicle model, the Tesla Model Y, surpassing 4 million units in the global market since its initial launch.

Cited from Arena EV on Thursday, this achievement aligns with the Model Y’s performance, which has also been the world’s best-selling passenger vehicle for three consecutive years, outperforming petrol, hybrid, and other electric vehicles.

Based on 2025 sales data, Tesla produced 1,654,667 vehicles and delivered 1,636,129 units to customers. Of this total, the Model Y was the main contributor to the company’s sales.

China has become a crucial market for Tesla. The company’s Gigafactory Shanghai operates intensively and delivered 851,732 vehicles in 2025, accounting for about 52 percent of Tesla’s global sales.

On a monthly basis, sales performance also shows a positive trend. In February, Tesla sold 38,206 vehicles in China, an increase of more than 42 percent compared to the same period the previous year.

This surge also drove Tesla’s market share in China’s battery electric vehicle segment to 13.74 percent, the highest level in nearly two years.

Nevertheless, Tesla still faces challenges in that market. Throughout 2025, Model Y sales in China were recorded at 425,337 units, down 34.44 percent from the previous year. Increasingly tight competition is one of the main factors behind the decline.

If including exports from China, wholesale sales of China-made Model Y reached 538,994 units in 2025, down 3.18 percent from the previous year. This indicates that although global demand remains high, the electric vehicle market is now increasingly competitive.
