Terrorist shooting in Paris suburb kills one and injures five

Moscow (ANTARA) – A shooting in the suburbs of Paris, France, left one person dead and five others injured, BFMTV reported on Friday.

The television channel said a gunman opened fire from a vehicle at several locations in the Yvelines department.

According to the report, the suspect has been arrested and detained by security authorities.

Laurent Mazaury, a member of the Yvelines Department Council, said several of the injured were in critical condition.

“Their injuries are very serious. Some victims have sustained more than one gunshot wound. Their lives are clearly in danger,” Mazaury said.

Nicolas Dainville, mayor of the commune of La Verrière, told BFMTV that a 12-year-old girl was among the injured and was in a stable condition.

French Deputy Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, citing security officials, said the shooting was being treated as a terrorist attack. He revised the number of injured from four to five.

The suspect fired an automatic firearm from inside a car and is now in custody.

“The prosecutor has classified the incident as a terrorist offence. The motive is still being established, but the prosecutor told the media that it may be linked to racism,” Nuñez said.

He said the investigation was continuing. “What is certain is that this is a terrorist offence,” Nuñez added.
