Tensions Rise as Iranian Missiles Intercepted Over Kuwait; US Reveals True Target
Kuwait announced that its air defence systems intercepted missile and drone attacks, described as ‘enemy’ strikes, on Wednesday (3/6/2026). This latest incident occurs as the oil-rich nation remains under the shadow of ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
The Kuwaiti military stated that the nation’s air defence systems were activated to counter the nocturnal attacks. Local authorities confirmed that the explosions heard across several regions were the result of interception processes carried out by the defence systems.
“The sound of explosions heard was the result of the air defence system intercepting these enemy attacks,” the Kuwaiti military stated in a release posted on the X platform. While the military did not provide specific details regarding the identity of the attackers, the incident took place amidst escalating confrontations between Iran and US allies in the region.
Kuwaiti state media, KUNA, reported that warning sirens sounded for a second time on the same night, signalling that the aerial threat persisted and that security forces remained on high alert.
Kuwait, a close US ally in the Gulf region, has been targeted several times since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran in late February. Those operations resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian officials, triggering a wider escalation of conflict across various points in the Middle East.
The intercepted attacks on Wednesday were not the first experienced by Kuwait in recent days. On Monday, the Kuwaiti government announced the successful downing of several missiles and drones directed at its territory. Following that incident, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs openly blamed Iran, stating that Tehran bears full responsibility for what they described as “vile acts.”
Meanwhile, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a statement regarding the attacks occurring earlier in the week. According to CENTCOM, the primary target of the Iranian missiles was not Kuwaiti civilian territory, but rather US forces stationed in the country. CENTCOM stated that its forces successfully intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at American military facilities.
“Our forces successfully intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting US forces based in Kuwait,” CENTCOM stated via X. The US military added that there were no casualties resulting from the incident.
