There are no signs that the United States (US) and Iran will reconcile in their protracted war in the Middle East. The latest news is that the UK stated on Saturday (9 May) local time that it is deploying the warship HMS Dragon to the Middle East.

This UK action is preparation for a potential multinational effort to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz when conditions permit.

HMS Dragon is an air defence destroyer. The unit was previously sent to the Eastern Mediterranean in March 2026, shortly after the start of the Iran war. At that time, HMS Dragon was focused on protecting Cyprus.

Its relocation to the Middle East follows France’s move to deploy a group of its aircraft carriers to the southern Red Sea. The two countries are collaborating on a defence plan aimed at restoring confidence in that trade route.

“The initial deployment of HMS Dragon is part of prudent planning that will ensure the UK is ready, as part of a multinational coalition jointly led by the UK and France, to secure the Strait of Hormuz when conditions allow,” said a spokesperson for the UK Ministry of Defence, quoted from Reuters on Monday (10 May 2026).

As the US and Iran move towards a potential exit from their 10-week war, France and the UK have been working on a proposal to lay the groundwork for safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz after the situation stabilises.

The plan requires coordination with Iran, and dozens of countries have indicated their willingness to participate.

The UK’s ability to participate in any protection mission will be limited by the resource-strapped Royal Navy, which is now much smaller than in the past and must retire several ships before their replacements become available.
