Tensions Escalate as Trump Threatens to Destroy Iran's Kharg Island
US President Donald Trump has expanded his military threats against Iran after the nation struck Tehran’s rocket launchers on Larak Island on Sunday (30/8). Trump boasted that Kharg Island, which serves as Iran’s primary oil export terminal, “will be blown up.”
As reported by CNBC on Monday (31/8/2026), this latest threat was issued by Trump via a statement on his Truth Social social media account. The US President even included a video, suspected to be AI-generated, showing a series of massive explosions at the Iranian energy hub.
“Kharg Island is being blown up to destruction!!! President DJT,” Trump wrote in his post, adding his initials at the end. He did not provide further details regarding the matter.
The video uploaded by Trump, according to Reuters, is likely the result of synthetic engineering, based on analysis using software designed to detect images manipulated by artificial intelligence.
Trump’s threat comes as fighting reignites between the US and Iran, after Washington’s forces bombarded Larak Island on Sunday (30/8) local time. This marks the first publicly known US attack on Iranian territory since hostilities ceased in late July.
US Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees US military operations in the Middle East, announced that its forces attacked two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island after the military stated that Tehran was preparing sea-mine-laden rockets to be launched into the Strait of Hormuz.
“Today, US forces attacked two Iranian launchers on Larak Island,” said CENTCOM spokesperson, Navy Captain Tim Hawkins, in his statement. “The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (Iran) was observed preparing to launch rockets laden with sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.”
“Last week, CENTCOM completed the clearing of sea mines from international shipping lanes in the strait. US forces continue to monitor the area closely and remain ready to protect the smooth flow of trade through this vital waterway,” he asserted.
Larak Island is a small Iranian island in the Strait of Hormuz, which has recently become a critical point for Tehran in the military and maritime control sectors. The island is also used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard to monitor ship traffic passing through one of the world’s most important maritime routes.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacked two US airbases in Jordan, namely King Hussein and Azrag airbases, with ballistic missiles and drones in the early hours of Monday (31/8). The attack was a retaliation for the recent US strike on Larak Island.
The IRGC claimed that its attacks had caused “severe damage.” They warned that further attacks from the US would be met with a much harsher response.
