Tensions Escalate as Iran Launches Missiles at Two Israeli Airbases
Tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated once again. Iranian authorities stated on Monday (8/6) that they had attacked two Israeli airbases, namely Nevatim and Tel Nof. This occurs as both parties engage in mutual attacks, marking the largest increase in combat since the ceasefire was implemented in April.
“The operation was carried out in response to missile attacks launched by the Zionist regime… against several radar sites in three different locations in Iran,” the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement, as reported by AFP on Monday (8/6/2026).
Meanwhile, the Israeli military (IDF), as reported by The Times of Israel on Monday (8/6/2026), stated that it had intercepted all missiles launched by Iran towards Israel this morning local time.
Iranian media reported on Monday (8/6) that Israel had attacked a petrochemical plant in Mahshahr, in southwestern Iran. This comes as the two warring nations continue to strike one another just hours after US President Donald Trump called for restraint.
“The Zionist enemy has carried out an airstrike against the Karoon Petrochemical Company in Mahshahr,” Iranian local media wrote on Telegram, according to AFP on Monday (8/6/2026).
The media quoted a local law enforcement official stating that Israeli projectiles had hit the facility.
Previously, air raid sirens sounded in Israel on Sunday (7/6) as the military attempted to intercept a barrage of Iranian missiles, the first since the April ceasefire in the Middle East war. In response to the Iranian attack, Israel subsequently launched missile strikes against Iran.
Israel stated that its missile strikes were a retaliatory measure against Iran’s attack on Sunday (7/6) involving 11 missiles, all of which were successfully intercepted with no casualties reported.
US President Donald Trump has attempted to calm Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as Israel accused Tehran of committing a “huge mistake.”
“I will call Bibi [Netanyahu’s nickname] now and tell him not to retaliate,” Trump said, as quoted by Axios journalist Barak Ravid in a telephone interview.
“Israel has carried out its attack and Iran has carried out its attack. We do not need any more attacks,” Trump said, as reported.
Ravid subsequently posted that a US official confirmed Trump had spoken with Netanyahu, although the White House and Trump have not yet provided a comment.
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper also called for restraint.
“The resurgence of conflict between Iran and Israel is in no one’s interest,” she wrote on the social media platform X, while calling for diplomacy.
