Tense Tribal Warfare in Wamena: 13 Dead, 789 Residents Displaced
According to the latest updated data, 13 people have died in the tribal warfare, stated the Head of Public Relations for the Jayawijaya Police, Ipda Efendi Al Husaini, on Monday (18/5/2026).
Meanwhile, 19 people have been reported injured, three of whom sustained serious injuries. Dozens of the wounded are still receiving treatment at the Wamena Regional General Hospital (RSUD).
“The number of seriously injured persons is three, while there are 16 with minor injuries,” he said.
Police authorities are still assessing the number of buildings damaged or burnt during the conflict. However, hundreds of residents have reportedly been displaced.
“The total number of displaced persons is 789, consisting of 369 adults, 298 children, and 122 elderly individuals. In terms of gender, there are 315 men and 476 women,” he revealed.
It is known that this clash involved the Pirime (Lanny) and Kurima (Woma) tribes, using sharp weapons and arrows. The conflict initially broke out in the Woma District, Jayawijaya, on Thursday (14/5), but spread to several locations across Jayawijaya until Friday (15/5).
