Tense Moments as Reckless Driver is Apprehended in Central Jakarta After Being Attacked by a Mob
The driver of a black Calya car who was driving recklessly on Jalan Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta, has been identified as HM (24) and has been named a suspect. Residents recounted the events leading up to the driver’s arrest after being attacked by a mob.
Witness Wawa (53), a resident of RT 10 RW 04, Pasar Baru Village, Central Jakarta, stated that he was fishing in the Ciliwung River, next to the location of the incident. Wawa then heard a commotion and the sound of gunshots.
He immediately ran to the location and saw a black car being attacked by a mob. He said that the driver of the car eventually ran out of options after his car was cornered by several vehicles.
“He was looking for an escape route. He hit this car, reversed. He hit this car on the left, reversed. Then there was another Avanza car, he couldn’t go anywhere, he was immediately cornered,” he said.
“He was cornered by an Avanza car on the right, and by a busway pole on the left. At that point, many people were already beating him,” Wawa continued.
Wawa saw a woman being taken out of the car. He also saw a mother and a small child in the car.
“There was a mother inside, so she was taken out, and there was also a woman who was taken out,” he added.
The driver of the car did not resist at the time. The police also entered the car to arrest the driver.
“He didn’t resist. He looked dazed, in shock. Then the police entered the car,” Wawa explained.
The driver of the car was immediately taken from the scene. Wawa said that the suspect was escorted to the police station.
“There were two police officers. One of them escorted the driver, and the other carried the driver. So there were two police officers in the car,” he said.
The chronology of the car hitting multiple vehicles
The incident occurred on Jalan Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (February 23) afternoon. The vehicle was initially spotted by officers driving recklessly in the middle of Jakarta’s afternoon traffic.
“The officers then asked him to pull over, but he ignored them, and the officers followed him. He turned onto Jalan Gunung Sahari IV, so he made a U-turn onto Gunung Sahari IV,” explained the Head of Traffic at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Komarudin.
Instead of slowing down, HM accelerated. The car sped down the street and was eventually pursued by officers.
“There, on the small street, his high speed was captured on the dashcam of a patrol car. From there, he turned left towards Bungur, and the most serious incident occurred when he entered Gunung Sahari V, which is a one-way street from Pasar Baru to Bungur. He entered there, and many vehicles almost became victims because there were many motorcycles, and he was still driving at high speed,” he said.
At the intersection of Pasar Baru, HM entered Jalan Budi Utomo, driving against traffic in the right lane. Officers pursued the suspect, who was driving recklessly and at high speed.
“Then the officers stopped at the intersection, in the middle of the road, and made a U-turn back to the intersection. Then, at the intersection, he turned left, where officers were already stationed. He almost hit one of our officers, then he turned towards Ancol, but he still didn’t want to stop,” he said.
From there, the suspect continued to drive towards Ancol and was pursued by officers. However, not far from there, the suspect encountered traffic and eventually drove against traffic again, hitting several vehicles.
“The officers continued to follow him. When he reached the Ancol area at the Pintu Besi traffic light, which was red, there was a queue of cars. He was probably blocked by the queue, but he turned around again towards Pasar Baru, on the same lane, not changing lanes. This is what was captured on camera,” he said.
