Tense! Italy Suddenly Lashes Out at NATO Chief Over Iran War
The Italian government openly issued a sharp rebuke to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday (24/6/2026). Tensions were triggered by Rutte’s statement that hundreds of United States military aircraft had taken off from American bases in Italy to support war operations against Iran.
Citing a Reuters report, Rome immediately and firmly denied the unilateral claim. Italian authorities stressed that they had only granted limited permission for flights of a technical and logistical nature, not for direct combat missions.
The political controversy began when Rutte spoke during a television interview on Fox News. The former Dutch prime minister used Italy as a concrete example of strong European support for Washington, mentioning that 500 US aircraft had flown from Italian bases to support the military operation codenamed Epic Fury.
The NATO chief’s statement immediately sparked political uproar within Italy. The administration led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has repeatedly assured the public that it has never authorised the use of Italian sovereign territory for direct military action against Tehran.
Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto promptly issued an official statement to quell the uproar. Crosetto stressed that all Italian policy had acted in full compliance with the country’s constitution and the international agreements governing allied bases on its soil.
‘As already clarified in parliament, the government exclusively authorised technical and logistical, non-kinetic activities,’ Crosetto asserted in his official release.
Crosetto added that his country has consistently rejected any foreign military requests that violate those rules. He also expressed bewilderment as to why the supreme leader of NATO, who has no connection to the US operational chain of command, had released such an erroneous statement.
‘The statement conveys a completely misleading message because it conflates legitimate support flights with combat-related operations,’ Crosetto added.
This imbroglio is believed likely to further strain bilateral relations between Prime Minister Meloni and US President Donald Trump. Last week, the two leaders were involved in a public spat after Italy refused to support the US military campaign against Iran, which subsequently led to personal attacks by Trump against Meloni.
Italy currently hosts around 120 US military facilities on its territory. These hundreds of combat assets are spread across several strategic points, including the Sigonella naval air station in Sicily and the Aviano air base in the north of the country.
Responding to the strong protest from Rome, an internal NATO official attempted to provide clarification to settle the misunderstanding. The official argued that their boss did not intend to accuse Italy of being involved in direct air strikes.
‘Rutte was merely highlighting how Allies, including Italy, implement existing bilateral agreements in the context of base placements and overflight rights,’ the NATO official said anonymously.
Nevertheless, opposition party leaders in Italy immediately seized on Rutte’s remarks to corner the government. They collectively demanded a new, honest explanation from Meloni’s cabinet regarding the transparency of US military activities on Italian soil.
Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Five Star Movement and former Italian prime minister, demanded that Meloni immediately provide clarification directly before members of parliament. The call was echoed sarcastically by Nicola Fratoianni of the Green and Left Alliance, who questioned the accuracy of the information from the Western alliance’s leader.
‘Either the government has misled members of parliament or Rutte has just suffered heatstroke,’ Fratoianni declared publicly.
