Tens of Millions of Chinese SMEs to Start Using Indonesia's QRIS
Bank Indonesia (BI) has officially launched the Quick Response Indonesia Standard (QRIS) for cross-border use between Indonesia and China on Thursday (30 April 2026).
The collaboration has been welcomed by the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI), given China’s large economic scale and advanced digital capabilities.
ASPI Chairman Santoso stated that the significant potential for widespread QRIS adoption lies in transactions involving micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in both countries.
“Indonesia has around 44-45 million MSMEs. In China, with its large population and numerous players, we understand there are nearly 100 million,” Santoso told reporters when met at Bank Indonesia’s head office in Jakarta on Thursday (30 April 2025).
Santoso also explained that shopping transactions will be straightforward using QRIS, as direct conversion will occur at the exchange rate set by the standards agreed upon by both countries.
The Indonesia-China cross-border QRIS is currently integrated with AliPay and UniPay. Meanwhile, WeChat Pay and MPC are still developing their integrations, according to Santoso.
“WeChat is being explored. There are technological aspects that need to be interconnected among them. In Indonesia, there are actually no issues,” Santoso said.
China becomes the sixth country capable of using cross-border QRIS. Previously, on 1 April 2026, BI had inaugurated QRIS use in South Korea. It was already usable in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan beforehand.
