TenPay Global and ShopeePay launch QR payments in China
TenPay Global, Tencent’s cross-border payment platform, and ShopeePay on Thursday announced the launch of cross-border QR code payments in China. The service will first be available to ShopeePay users from Singapore and Thailand before being expanded to Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines in the next phase.
The service enables Southeast Asian travellers to scan and make payments easily at tens of millions of merchants that accept WeChat Pay QR codes directly through the ShopeePay and Shopee applications.
ShopeePay is a digital payment and financial services provider operating in Southeast Asia and Brazil. The launch marks an important milestone in ShopeePay’s efforts to build an increasingly connected and inclusive digital payment ecosystem in the region.
“We are bringing the ShopeePay experience that users already know outside their home markets, so they can make payments abroad as easily and comfortably as in their home country. As travel and trade between Southeast Asia and China continue to increase, we believe that smoother cross-border payments can help users and businesses stay connected and open new opportunities,” said Supphavit Hongamornsin, regional senior director of ShopeePay.
As China hosts the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) this year, consumption by foreign tourists and visitors in China continues to rise.
Tencent is actively contributing to the development of the Cross-Border Interconnection Payment Gateway and is leveraging the platform to improve payment services for foreign users through international digital wallets on WeChat Pay. To date, Tencent has established partnerships with nearly 50 international digital wallets.
WeChat Pay HK, PayPal from the United States, Hana Pay and Travel Wallet from South Korea, and MoMo and ZaloPay from Vietnam are among the digital wallets that have been connected to the gateway through TenPay Global.
Meanwhile, more digital wallets from various APEC economies are accelerating their connection process. With the service, foreign visitors in China can make payments by scanning WeChat Pay QR codes using the digital wallets they commonly use in their home countries, without needing to change their payment habits.
In line with the expansion of partnerships with international digital wallets, WeChat Pay is also introducing a new phase of service improvements for international card users. Users who link an international bank card to WeChat for the first time this year and complete their first transaction will receive a waiver of the 3 percent international card processing fee for 90 consecutive calendar days, with a transaction limit of 1,000 yuan per day.
WeChat Pay is also expanding in-app payment guides to 16 languages, including English, Korean, Thai, Russian, Spanish, and Arabic. In addition, Weixin Pay is providing service desks at several key locations, including airports, entry points, hotels, and major commercial areas, to provide payment convenience for foreign visitors from various APEC economies.
