Tenggerese to hold chant contest
SURABAYA: Tenggerese sorcerer Soedjai said on Thursday that people living near Mount Bromo in the East Java regency Probolinggo would perform the Sanskrit chant prayer contest before commemorating Yadnya Kasada Day on Sept. 23.
The Tenggerese, strong followers of Hinduism, celebrate Yadnya Kasada Day during which they show their gratitude to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (the one and only God) by giving offerings and sacrificing animals.
Soedjai said that the tribe would also perform its dramatic folk dance, and get holy water before the ritual of Kasada. The four hour ritual starts at 12 p.m. and ends when the offerings are tossed into Bromo's crater.
Thousands of Tenggerese descendants from Probolinggo, Lumajang, Pasuruan, and Malang regencies will bring the offerings to Luhur Temple on the massive sandy crater near Mount Bromo, accompanied by lantern light and traditional music. --Antara
