Tencent Ready to Support Indonesia's Free Nutritious Meal Programme with AI Technology
Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Wang Lutong has stated there is potential for cooperation between China and Indonesia in supporting the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme. Support from China, Wang said, could involve the utilisation of technology developed by Chinese technology companies related to food distribution in schools. One of those mentioned by Wang is Tencent, the technology giant from the ‘Bamboo Curtain’ country. Tencent, Wang said, is preparing support for the free meal programme. “So I think I understand that some Chinese businesses are also supporting this free meal programme in whatever way they can,” he told reporters after attending the FPCI China-Indonesia Think Tank and Media Forum in Kuningan, Jakarta on Wednesday (24/6/2026). Wang explained that Tencent is developing technology to automatically record the number of students attending school each day. This data can then be forwarded to the free meal kitchens, allowing them to accurately provide food according to the number of students present. “So the school and also the public kitchen will know how many people are coming to school. So they will send the free meals according to the number of students who come to school,” he said. Wang expressed hope that through cooperation between the two countries and involving technology companies, the sustainability of the MBG programme can run well. “So we hope this (MBG) will run well,” he concluded.
