Ten UGM Engineering Students Allegedly Involved in Lewd Group Chat Conversations
The Faculty of Engineering (FT) at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) has provided an update regarding the circulation of student chat logs within the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (DTETI) that involve sexual harassment against female students. The faculty stated that ten students are suspected of involvement.
“I have met directly with the suspected students. There were 10 individuals yesterday, and we are continuing to examine other students who may be involved. All of them are from the 2024 cohort,” said the Dean of FT UGM, Prof Ir Selo, via a text message on Tuesday (29/9/2026).
He emphasised that the faculty will suspend all suspects from all academic activities.
Selo added that FT UGM will continue to oversee the investigation process in collaboration with the UGM Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force (PPKS). He expressed hope that the investigation would be completed properly and ensured that protection for the victims would be maintained throughout the process.
“The goal is, of course, to ensure that during the investigation, the campus atmosphere can return to being comfortable, protecting the victims, and maintaining the integrity of the investigation,” he concluded.
Previously, screenshots of a student group chat within the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (DTET_I) at the Faculty of Engineering, UGM, went viral on social media. The circulating screenshots contained conversations involving sexual harassment against female students.
“Threads users, it is sad because the viral case of sexual harassment at FH UI changed nothing… using women as sexual objects, how can they harass women so easily? It is happening again at UGM with different individuals. Please help boost this!!” wrote the Threads account @hmart_lw, as reported on Monday (28/9).
The uploaded screenshots showed several students using sensitive language that degraded female body parts. The post has since been deleted.
Meanwhile, the FT UGM and DTETI UGM authorities have issued a formal statement via their official Instagram account. The statement reads:
“STATEMENT OF POSITION FROM THE FACULTY OF ENGINEERING, GADJAH MADA UNIVERSITY (FT UGM). Regarding the occurrence of Online Gender-Based Violence (KBGO) involving students, FT UGM declares the following:

When asked for confirmation, the Chair of the UGM Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force (PPKS), Prof Dra Raden Ajeng Yayi Suryo Prabandari, stated that the university is currently in the process of investigating the alleged sexual harassment.
