Ten Latest Updates on the Case of KontraS Activist Assaulted with Caustic Liquid
The case of a caustic liquid attack on Andrie Yunus, Deputy Coordinator of KontraS, continues to be investigated. Jakarta Metro Police have released the latest information regarding the matter.
The caustic liquid attack allegedly occurred on Thursday, 12 March 2026, at approximately 23.30 WIB on Jalan Salemba, Senen, Central Jakarta. CCTV footage shows two men riding a motorcycle at the location. The following are the latest details concerning the case:
- Jakarta Metro Police Deploy Scientific Crime Investigation
Jakarta Metro Police Chief Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri stated that his office is continuing to investigate the caustic liquid attack on Andrie Yunus. He said the case will be investigated using scientifically verifiable methods.
“From the outset when information was received, the Jakarta Metro Police and National Police Headquarters have taken police steps, using scientific crime investigation,” said Inspector General Asep.
He stated that the scientific investigation was conducted through examination of the victim’s condition and statement, gathering statements from witnesses, analysis of the crime scene, production of victim examination reports, and collection of other evidence.
The caustic liquid attack is being investigated by a joint team from the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Central Jakarta Metro Police and the General Criminal Investigation Directorate of Jakarta Metro Police.
“All these stages are conducted to ensure that the incident that occurred can be revealed objectively based on facts, evidence and valid statements,” he explained.
Asep stated that Jakarta Metro Police and Central Jakarta Metro Police are committed to handling this case professionally, transparently and accountably. Police will investigate the case thoroughly.
“These steps are implemented in accordance with the President’s directive and the National Police Chief’s instruction for all stages to proceed professionally, transparently and be investigated to completion,” he said.
“In the implementation process, we prioritise the principle of caution so that every information provided to the public has been verified to avoid speculation and misperceptions in society,” he added.
- Jakarta Metro Police Exercises Caution in Investigating Case
Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri guaranteed that the investigation into the caustic liquid attack on Andrie Yunus is conducted transparently and professionally. Asep also stated that the case disclosure is conducted with the principle of caution.
“In its implementation, we prioritise the principle of caution so that every information conveyed to the public has been verified to avoid speculation and incorrect perceptions in society,” said Inspector General Asep.
He stated that according to directives from President Prabowo Subianto and National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, the case investigation is conducted objectively.
“We affirm that Jakarta Metro Police are committed to handling this case professionally, transparently and accountably,” he explained.
- Police Reveal Suspect Route Before and After Attack
Police revealed the route taken by the alleged perpetrators of the caustic liquid attack on Andrie Yunus. Police stated that the route was determined through CCTV footage examination at multiple points.
“The alleged perpetrators allegedly followed the victim’s movements before the incident. The movements of the alleged perpetrators were detected through several surveillance camera points with a route beginning from the perpetrators’ movements from South Jakarta towards the initial gathering point on Jalan Medan Merdeka Timur, near Gambir Station,” said Metro Jakarta Police General Criminal Investigation Director Kombes Iman Imanuddin.
Iman stated that the perpetrators then travelled along Jalan Ir H Juanda, Central Jakarta. After this, the perpetrators proceeded to Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat.
“From Jalan Medan Merdeka Barat, they then moved towards the Tugu Tani area. So following the sequence, they circled the National Monument towards the Tugu Tani area,” said Iman.
From the Tugu Tani area, the alleged perpetrators briefly went to a petrol station in Cikini, Central Jakarta. Iman stated that the alleged perpetrators then proceeded to the YLBHI office on Jalan Diponegoro, Central Jakarta.
“From this YLBHI office, the perpetrators began following the victim after the victim finished an event at YLBHI,” he said.
He stated that Andrie refuelled at a petrol station on Jalan Cikini Raya. Around 23.35 WIB, the alleged perpetrators were believed to be at the petrol station.
“Allegedly four suspected perpetrators using motorcycles were waiting for the victim in front of KFC Cikini. Then they followed the victim moving towards Jalan Diponegoro and subsequently towards Jalan Salemba I. When the incident occurred at 23.37 WIB on Thursday, 12 March 2026, at Jalan Salemba I intersection with Jalan Talang in Central Jakarta, that is where the crime scene occurred,” said Iman.
After the incident, two motorcycles with perpetrators fled in different directions. One motorcycle carrying suspect 1 and 2 went against traffic on Jalan Salemba Raya towards Senen, towards Jalan Kramat Raya, Tugu Tani, then towards Stasiun Gondangdia, and then towards South Jakarta.
Meanwhile, one vehicle carrying suspect 3 and 4 continued straight on Jalan Pramuka Sari II to Matraman, then continued to Jatinegara, then to Jalan Otto Iskandardinata in East Jakarta.
Iman stated that his office was conducting digital processing of communications devices. He noted that one of the perpetrators allegedly changed clothes and then dispersed towards Kalibata, Ragunan and Bogor.
- National Police Form Joint Task Force to Investigate Perpetrators
The National Police formed a joint task force to investigate the case related to the caustic liquid attack on Andrie Yunus. The joint task force is described as demonstrating the seriousness of the National Police in investigating the case.
“As a sign of the seriousness of the National Police in handling this case, we have currently formed a joint task force for case disclosure consisting of investigators from the Criminal Investigation Unit of Jakarta Central Police, then investigators from the General Crime Directorate of Jakarta Metro Police and from the National Police Criminal Investigation Directorate,” said Kombes Iman Imanuddin.
Police also conducted investigations through CCTV analysis and communications channels. Kombes Iman stated that 86 surveillance camera points were being traced.
