Ten jailbirds return

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: Ten prisoners out of 40 who escaped Bireuen Penitentiary in North Aceh during a prison riot on Sunday have returned, according to an official.

Antara quoted the head of the provincial justice office, Abdul Sani Damanik, as saying on Thursday that some of the jailbirds were brought back by their relatives and some were caught by the police.

"We appeal to the conscience of the fleeing prisoners to return and serve the remainder of their time," Damanik said.

"If they refuse to return of their own will, then the authorities will hunt them down," he said.

He did not give any details about the rioting, saying police were still investigating it. (swe)
